What does S3 SR mean?

S3 SR is a European safety rating for work footwear, defined by standard EN ISO 20345:2022. S3 covers steel toe cap, anti-puncture midsole, water-resistant upper, and antistatic sole. SR is the slip-resistance test on a ceramic floor with detergent — it replaced the older SRA / SRB / SRC markings used under the 2011 version of the standard. The Defender is certified to the current 2022 standard by TÜV Rheinland under notified body 0197.

What size should I order?

The Defender fits true to your usual EU size. Some early customers have reported the fit runs slightly large — if you prefer a snug fit or are between sizes, consider going one size down. Sizes EU 36–48 are available.

Is the upper genuine leather?

Yes. The Defender upper is embossed cow leather — real leather with a finished textured surface. The shoes arrive lightly oiled, which is visible on inspection and confirms the material. Embossed cow leather benefits from periodic conditioning to keep it supple and water-resistant. Apply a standard leather conditioner every few months in regular use.

Are the Defender shoes waterproof?

The Defender is water-resistant, not waterproof. The embossed cow leather upper resists splashes, light rain, and damp surfaces, but the shoe is not designed for prolonged immersion. Under EN ISO 20345:2022, waterproof footwear carries an S7 rating; the Defender is rated S3, which guarantees water resistance, not waterproofing.

Are they comfortable for all-day wear?

Most customers report comfort after a brief break-in period. The Hi-Poly cushioned insole and 580 g per shoe weight (size 42) keep fatigue lower than typical industrial safety shoes. Expect some initial stiffness — the steel toe cap and anti-puncture plate make all new safety shoes feel firm at first. Comfort improves measurably after a few days of regular wear.

How heavy is each shoe?

Each Defender shoe weighs 580 g at EU size 42 — noticeably lighter than typical industrial safety shoes, which often sit between 700 g and 900 g per shoe. The weight saving comes from the steel-toe-and-midsole construction combined with a PU outsole rather than rubber.

What is the steel anti-puncture plate?

The Defender has a steel plate built into the midsole that prevents nails, screws, glass, or sharp debris from penetrating the bottom of the shoe. It's the original full-coverage puncture protection layer required by S3 — not the lighter textile alternative permitted under the 2022 standard.

Are they suitable for construction work?

Yes. The Defender is certified to S3 SR under EN ISO 20345:2022 — the standard required for construction sites, workshops, warehouses, industrial floors, and logistics work. The steel toe (200 J impact), steel anti-puncture plate, and slip-resistant outsole cover the core hazards of these environments. Confirm any site-specific requirements with your employer or safety officer.

How do I care for the leather?

Wipe the leather clean after each use with a dry cloth. Treat with a standard leather conditioner every few months to keep the upper supple and water-resistant. Avoid direct heat sources for drying — let damp shoes air-dry at room temperature. Regular care extends the life of the leather and maintains its appearance.
